The Charles Wells Audit
Charles Wells performs the apparently impossible. This old-established family brewer from Bedford is both highly conservative and markedly innovative. The paradox is deeply rooted in its markets, its products and its ownership. All three demand continuity. Paul Wells, the managing director, acts for the family in keeping consumers faithful by being faithful to them.

Since 1875 the Charles Wells brewery has been brewing beer in the East of England. Today its beers are not just sold in the UK. In fact approaching 25% of the company's output is exported to 23 countries around the world, including pubs, which Charles Wells owns in Italy, Spain and in France. In 1997 this success in the export market was recognised with a Queens Award for Export Achievement.
In the UK Charles Wells also has a depot in Kings Cross London in addition to a flourishing Free Trade and Take Home business. So, although still a family based business, its products are available far and wide, not just in the estate of over 260 branded Charles Wells pubs. Additionally, via Red Stripe, Charles Wells has entered the music venue business with interests in the Shepherds Bush Empire and Brixton Academy.
